Volnay Santenots 1er Cru Cuvee Jehan de Massol 2022
162th Hospices De Beaune Wine Auction on the 21st November 2022
Vintage report
The Italian doctor Augustino Mazzoli, dazzled by the beauty of the town of Beaune, decided to take up residence there and became one of the first doctors of the Hôtel-Dieu, practising until his death in 1505. One of his descendants, whose name was francized, the magistrate Jéhan de Massol, bequeathed a collection of works of art on his death in 1669, which saved the institution from ruin.
This wine is 100% Santenots, but with parcels that have important nuances in their proportion of clay. The Santenots of the Bas are not very stony, with deep clays that do not drain well. Those in the Plures sector are thinner and more chalky. It is certainly these differences that make this a complete, rich, dense wine with an assertive and rather "sustained" character for a Volnay. A wine that will undoubtedly keep for a long time.
Like its stablemate Cuvée Gauvain, Jéhan de Massol is deeply coloured and darkly concentrated on the nose. But there is a fresher mineral thread running through the deep dark fruit, some sun-dried cherries. Though in a relatively ripe idiom, Cuvée Jéhan de Massol has found the right balance. Excellent energy permeates the finish.
