Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Marie-Léoncie 2023
The 2023 Cuvée des Générations Marie-Léoncie is the current release of Château de la Gardine's flagship white, and a benchmark example of what Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc can achieve. It's built on around 95% old-vine Roussanne with 5% Clairette, grown on Urgonian limestone and raised entirely in new oak barrels. In its youth it shows more intensity and drive than the mature vintages: ripe stone fruits, honeyed orange, delicate flowers and a toasted-bread note all lift from the glass.
On the palate it's medium- to full-bodied, with a broad, layered mouthfeel and a beautiful balance of richness and freshness. The new oak is present but well-judged, framing the fruit rather than dominating it, and the finish is long and precise. This is a wine you can enjoy young or hold, and it sits comfortably among the top whites of the vintage.
A statement white for a premium by-the-glass programme or a cellar — Roussanne at full power, with the freshness to carry it.
