Châteauneuf du Pape Générations Gaston-Philippe 2019
The 2019 Cuvée des Générations Gaston-Philippe is the estate's prestige red from one of the Rhône's most celebrated recent vintages. Built on roughly equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from very old vines, hand-harvested and aged entirely in new French oak for 12 months, it carries the concentration and controlled power this cuvée is made for. The nose is generous and deep, with ripe black fruit, cassis, sweet spice, licorice and a graphite-and-oak frame.
On the palate it's full-bodied and richly concentrated, with the warmth and ripeness of the 2019 vintage supported by firm, fine tannins and a long, spice-laden finish. It has the density to reward cellaring but enough fruit generosity to show well with a good decant now.
A powerful, structured Châteauneuf from a great year — a strong cellar addition and a persuasive pour for a client who wants the estate at its most ambitious.
